New Mexico Authors

Author, poet, naturalist. Many awards, including being a Pulitzer Prize finalist for her memoir One Hundred Names For Love (also a finalist for the National Book Circle Critics Award). Author of numerous works of poetry, natural history, and history including The Zookeeper's Wife. Her memoirs, Twilight of the Tenderfoot recounts her early days on Tequesquite Ranch in New Mexico.

(1939-2008) Laguna Pueblo. Ph.D. in American Studies at UNM. Taught at many institutions including UNM. Her book Pocahontas : Medicine Woman, Spy, Entrepreneur, Diplomat was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Many awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writer's Circle of the Americas.

(1873-1947) Author noted for works about frontier life on the Great Plains. Noted for the novel Death Comes for the Archbishop, based upon the life of Archbishop Lamy. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 for One of Ours, a novel set during World War I.

Rodeo New Mexico. Storyteller, historian, poet. Winner of numerous awards including five-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, three-time winner of the Western Heritage Award, two-time winner of the Spur Award, and winner of the Willa Award (named for Willa Cather). Author of the poetry collection Shadows in My Hands: a Southwestern Odyssey. Author of numerous novels including The O'Keefe Empire and Doc Holliday's Woman.

Teacher at the College of Santa Fe. Works include Enchantment and Exploitation : the life and hard times of a New Mexico mountain range and River of traps : a village life which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Albuquerque. Extensive experience in air transport, air traffic safety, and human factors engineering; former investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Silent Knights: Blowing the Whistle on Military Accidents and Their Coverups. Author of Air Safety Investigators: Using Science to Save Lives—One Crash at a Time. Author of several thriller novels including Kidnap Marilyn: The Daring Scheme to Save Her.

Born in New Mexico. Journalist with the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. Winner of numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting. Author of several books including the bestselling The Power of Habit : Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business.

Santa Fe. Ph.D. in English and American literature from Harvard University. Author of several works including God's Perfect Child: Living and Dying in the Christian Science Church and the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Prairie Fires : the American dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

(1903-1991). Moved to Albuquerque in 1915. Author of fiction and non-fiction works; twice recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for History, first in 1955 for Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History and again in 1976 for Lamy of Santa Fe: His Life and Times. Attended New Mexico Military Institute, where he later served as librarian. Lifelong friend of artist Peter Hurd.

(1901-1963) Anthropologist and ethnologist who wrote many fictional works about New Mexico including Laughing Boy, a novel that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1930, and Enemy Gods about a Navajo boy returning to traditional ways after being sent to boarding school. His stories published in prominent national magazines were sympathetic to Native Americans and he was a champion for Indian Rights in the United States and Mexico, serving as president of the Association on American Indian Affairs. He also wrote a column for the New Mexican in Santa Fe. Author of his autobiography, Raw Materials.

(1910-2003) Historian, photographer. Twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, recipient of many awards including the Wallace Stegner Award and two Guggenheim grants. Grew up on a ranch in Colorado, worked as a miner, explored the Southwest. Wrote extensively on the Santa Fe Trail, Bent's Fort, and the frontier period. Author of Mother Earth, Father Sky : Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest and The Santa Fe Trail. Wrote several books for children.

(1921-2003) Born in Mountain Park, New Mexico. Editorial cartoonist best known for his "Willie and Joe" cartoons about the average soldier in World War II. Twice recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, 1945 and 1959. Author/illustrator of numerous books, including A Sort of a Saga which is about his youth in New Mexico.

(1939-2019) AKA: Bob Mayer. Santa Fe. Journalist; editor of the Santa Fe Reporter. Recipient of a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. Author of several works including Sweet Salt and The Dreams of Ada.

Santa Fe area novelist and playwright. Active with the New York Times bestselling author. Many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for The Road and the National Book Award for All the Pretty Horses. The film adaptation of his book No Country for Old Men won four Academy Awards including Best Picture.

(1934-) Navarre Scott Momaday. Author/poet/painter. Oklahoma-born Kiowa whose parents took teaching positions at Jemez Pueblo when he was 12. Earned Bachelors degree in Political Science at UNM, then Masters and Ph.D. at Stanford, where he also taught English. Received the Pulitzer Prize for House Made of Dawn (1968); other popular titles are The Way to Rainy Mountain (1969) and The Ancient Child (1989). Painted the poster for the 1990 Santa Fe Indian Market. Received the Governor's Art Award in 1996 and the National Medal of Arts in 2007.

(1937-2016) Santa Fe. Photographer, author of several books including Desert Wetlands and New Mexico: Images of a Land and Its People and The People: Pueblo Portraits and Africa, The Holocausts of Rwanda and Sudan which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

(1900-1945) Ernest Taylor Pyle. Journalist, best known for his combat coverage of WWII, during which service he was killed on an island near Okinawa. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for journalistic reporting in 1944; he was very popular for his depictions of the average American soldier. Before the war, he gained a following for his down-home views on the world, including articles that spoke glowingly of the Southwest in general and Albuquerque in particular. The City of Albuquerque, as the result of a campaign led by Erna Fergusson, acquired his home which was made into the first ABCLS branch library in 1948. The Ernie Pyle Middle School in Albuquerque is named in his honor. Among his popular titles: Home Country and Here is Your War: story of G.I. Joe.

(1890-1968) Novelist. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, 1951, for The Town. Lived in Albuquerque 1928-33, subsequently rotating between there, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Wrote short stories on the Southwest and the novel The Sea of Grass about conflicts between New Mexico ranchers and farmers; a film based upon the book was filmed in New Mexico on the Plains of San Agustin near Magdalena.

(1943-2017) Home in Santa Fe since the 1980s, lived there part of the time. Playwright and actor. Scholar with the Santa Fe Institute. Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for the play Buried Child. Author of Sam Shepard New Mexico.

Santa Fe. Poet, translator, writer, professor. Professor emeritus at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Numerous grants and awards including a National Book Award for Poetry. Author of numerous collections of poetry including The Ginkgo Light and Compass Rose which was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Inaugural Poet Laureate of Santa Fe, serving 2006-2008.
