Barker, S. OmarAKA: Squire Omar Barker, S.O.B. (1894-1985) Squire Omar Barker. Born and raised in northern New Mexico on a ranch near Las Vegas; graduated New Mexico Normal School (now New Mexico Highlands University) in 1924. Spouse of Elsa McCormick Barker, also a noted Western writer. Served a term as president of the Western Writers of America, later named "Lifetime President" and received their Saddleman Award for Lifetime Achievement. Recipient of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree from New Mexico Highlands University. Very prolific author, with over 1,200 articles, 1,500 stories, and 2,500 poems to his credit; most famous poem "A Cowboy's Christmas Prayer" gained international notoriety. Inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in 1978.
