(1880-1958) Born in southern Colorado to a family that homesteaded in northern New Mexico. Degrees from University of Colorado and University of Chicago; served as professor of modern languages at UNM. Inviited to head the Romanic Languages department at Stanford University. Folklorist working primarily with Spanish-American materials; served as president of the American Folklore Society. Honored several times by the Spanish government; honorary degrees from the University of San Francisco and UNM. Author of numerous works, often with noted anthropologist Franz Boas, including The Folkore of Spain in the American Southwest and New-Mexican Spanish Folk-Lore and The Spanish language in New Mexico and southern Colorado.

Maria Del Carmen Gertrudis Espinosa. Albuquerque. Teacher of Spanish, historian. Writer of articles for the New Mexico Department of Education, New Mexico Magazine, and The Albuquerque Tribune. Author of Shawls, Crinolines, Filigree: The dress and adornment of the women of New Mexico, 1739 to 1900. Co-author, with Dolores Perrault, of New Mexico Colonial Embroidery.

Also writes as Jose M. Espinosa. Jose Manuel Espinosa. Studied folklore at Stanford University under his father, and received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley where he later taught. Editor / author / translator of several books about New Mexico folklore and history, including Spanish Folk-Tales from New Mexico and Crusaders of the Rio Grande : the story of Don Diego de Vargas and the reconquest and refounding of New Mexico.

Genealogical researcher and historian. Writer of articles; contributor to several anthologies. In 2009 inducted into the Order of Isabel la Católica with the rank of Cruz de Oficial for dedication to preserving Spanish heritage in New Mexico. While never published during his life, these articles were the basis for the book Along Navajo Trails: Recollections of a Trader 1898-1948 as edited by his granddaughter Susan Evans Woods and historian Robert McPherson.
