(1916-1989) Also wrote as: Kevin Connor; Frank O'Malley; Patrick O'Malley. Noted author of western and mystery novels who lived in Taos in the 1950s, his time there influencing his Western stories. Author of more than 60 novels, later in life turned to writing children's books. Several novels turned into films including The Bravados starring Gregory Peck and A Mule for the Marquesa which was the basis for the 1966 film The Professionals. Many of his western novels are set in New Mexico and around Taos; The Man Who Found His Way (1957) involves Hispanic witchcraft in northern New Mexico.

(1926-2005) Frank Valencia Ortiz y Barbero. Born in Santa Fe, of a many-generation NM family. Graduated from Santa Fe High School, taught at UNM. Served variously as US Ambassador to Barbados, Guatemala, Peru, and Argentina. Retired to Santa Fe, where he worked with the New Mexico History Museum and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. (AKA: Nina Otero, born María Adelina Isabel Emilia Otero.) (1881-1965) Born in La Costancia near Los Lunas; longtime resident around Santa Fe including upon a ranch she homesteaded. Student at St. Vincent's Academy in Albuquerque; eventually served as Superintendent for Public Schools in Santa Fe County. Noted figure in the Suffragist movement in New Mexico. Chair of the New Mexico Republican State Committee’s women’s division and as chair of the Legislative Committee of the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs. First Hispanic woman to run for Congress. Honored in 2022 by being featured on a US quarter. Author of Old Spain in our Southwest, featuring stories from her childhood in Los Lunas.

Co-founder in the 1930s of Writer's Editions, a cooperative "to publish good books that otherwise might not see the light of day", published in Santa Fe through Rydal Press. Noted works include Miguel of the Bright Mountain and Little Valley and Indian art of the Southwest : an exposition of methods and practices.

(1948-2002) Choctaw, Cherokee, and Irish-American descent. Taught at many universities including UNM. Recipient of many awards, including awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts; recipient of a New Mexico Humanities Grant. Wrote many works on Indian Studies, and authored a number of mysteries with Native American themes including Nightland which is set in New Mexico.

(1899-1992) Member of the Sisters of Loretto. Schoolteacher in northern New Mexico. Prolific writer of Catholic histories. Author of articles for periodicals including New Mexico Magazine. Author of a series of comic books about Loretto history to be used as teaching tools.
