James, WillAKA: William Roderick James. (1892-1942) Born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault in Canada, though in later life he claimed to have been born in Montana. Pursued a cowboy life in several locations including a ranch near Cimarron New Mexico. Jailed in Nevada for cattle rustling, he used his time there to develop his drawing skills. After time spent in San Francisco, moved to New Mexico and developed contacts in the Santa Fe Artist's Colony. Later lived in Nevada, Montana, and California. Writer of articles for periodicals. Writer / illustrator of 24 books, many for young people, including The Will James Cowboy Book and Uncle Bill: a tale of two kids and a cowboy and the Newbery Award-winning Smoky the Cowhorse which had three film adaptations. Author of his autobiography Lone Cowboy which was also made into a film as was his book Sand.
