Given that name during the celebration of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad reaching Albuquerque in April 1880. Later renamed Central Avenue.

AKA: Railway Hospital, Railroader's Hospital, Railwaymen's Hospital, Santa Fe Hospital. Formally, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Hospital in Albuquerque. Near Central and I-25. Opened in 1926 as the Santa Fe Hospital to treat AT&SF employees (primarily for tuberculosis); name changed to AT&SF Hospital in the 1940s. Sold in the 1980s to a psychiatrist group and renamed Memorial Hospital. Repurposed/remodeled in 2010 as Hotel Parq Central.

Many railroads have operated in New Mexico, the most famous being the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, the "Santa Fe", which did much to open up New Mexico to tourism in conjunction with the Fred Harvey Company. The AT&SF reached Albuquerque April 15 1880, with the commemorative celebration held on April 22; railroad promoter and land developer Franz Huning, who had donated land for the depot, served as master of ceremonies. The location of the AT&SF Rail Yards in Albuquerque provided many jobs and was the main cause for rapid growth of the city. Today, Amtrak offers service through New Mexico on two routes, the Southwest Chief and the Texas Eagle. AKA: Railyards, Railroad Yards, Rail Shop, Railway Shops, Albuquerque Locomotive Repair Shops. Regional maintenance/repair facility for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, located in the Barelas district of Albuquerque. (The yard location was originally to be Bernalillo, but high asking price for the land there resulted in the move to Albuquerque.) Established in 1880 at First and Central and expanding five miles out to a tie-treatment plant, the Yards fostered rapid population growth in the area and at one point between a third and a half of Albuquerque's working men were employed with the Yards. The largest such facility in the Southwest, it ran 24/7 but began to decline after dieselization of rail equipment. Abandoned for decades, the rail shops have recently seen use as filming locations and market space, and in 1997 the Wheels Museum incorporated to repurpose the site and buildings as a museum of transportation. "Official State Question". Refers to the question asked by a waitperson at a restaurant, as to whether you want red chile sauce or green chile sauce on/with your entree. If you want both, an understood answer is "Christmas!"

AKA: Road Runner, Chapparal Cock, Paisano, Ground Cuckoo, Snake Killer. State Bird of New Mexico, member of the cuckoo family. Long-legged, typically moves by running along the ground though capable of short flights; sometimes soars downhill. With two toes forward and two toes pointed backward to facilitate running, it leaves a distinctive X-shaped track. Hunts a wide range of small prey, including mice, lizards and snakes. Very regular in habits and curious about changes in its environment; sometimes nests near or in human structures, and may co-exist with humans. The "runner" part of the name is justified, as roadrunners have been clocked running in excess of 20 MPH.

AKA: "Missile Garden". Nickname for the antenna farm of the Sandia Crest Electronic Site which, especially when covered with ice in winter, when seen from town reminds some people of an array of rockets.

(1856-1927) Bernard Shandon Rodey. Ireland-born lawyer and politician. Moved to Albuquerque in 1881, became a lawyer, then city attorney. Elected to the Territorial Senate, member of the Constitutional Convention. Author of the bill creating the University of New Mexico. Rodey Hall at UNM named in his honor.

(1931-2004) Albuquerque. Communication scholar, sociologist, writer, and teacher; originated the term early adopter and the Diffusion of Innovations theory. Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UNM, helping to establish the doctoral program in Communication there. Co-author, with Nancy R. Bartlit, of Silent Voices of World War II : when sons of the Land of Enchantment met sons of the Land of the Rising Sun.

U.S. President 1901-1909. Visited New Mexico in 1898 to recruit men for his Rough Riders. Attended the first annual reunion of the Rough Riders, held in Las Vegas New Mexico in 1899. Visited Albuquerque in 1903, during which stop he visited St. Mary's School. Visited Albuquerque Oct. 23, 1916 to campaign for Republican presidential nominee Charles Evans Hughes.

Albuquerque. Retired plant ecologist who noted many lead tire weights along city streets. This observation during his daily walks led to a 1996 study that concluded that more than three tons of the lead weights were falling off of Albuquerque's cars every year, to be ground into dust by passing vehicles. Root's study sparked concerns that the powdered lead, a toxic substance, likely found its way into the area's air, soil, and water. In later years the EPA sought a ban on lead wheel weights, and at least six U.S. states have banned them with other states seeking such bans; many major manufacturers have now turned to non-lead alternatives.

AKA: US 66, The Mother Road. The Route 66 road, commissioned in 1926, was one of the reasons for Albuquerque's growth. Running north-south through town from 1926-1937 and east-west (along Central Avenue) from 1937 to 1985, when 66 was decommissioned. (The east-west realignment was largely due to the efforts of exiting governor Arthur Thomas Hannett, in the maneuver remembered as "Hannett's Joke".) Route 66 has become the subject of nostalgic tourism; Albuquerque has numerous landmarks from the 66 "glory days".

AKA: West Central Route 66 Visitor Center. Opened in 2023 on Central Avenue west of Albuquerque, on Nine Mile Hill. Developed by the West Central Community Development Group, the facility offers a Route 66 museum, banquet/event hall, outdoor amphitheater, taproom, and gift shop.
