As voted on by 503 novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, critics, academics, translators, booksellers, librarians, and other book lovers - with a little help from the staff of The New York Times Book Review. Participants were asked to pick their 10 best books of the first 25 years of the 21st century, with "best" being subjective (it could just be their favorites). Any book chosen had to be published in the United States, in English, on or after January 1, 2000. After casting their ballots, respondents were given the option to answer another series of prompts, with that data being combined to the vote tallies. Participants included Stephen King, Bonnie Garmus, Claudia Rankine, James Patterson, Lucy Sante, Sarah Jessica Parker, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, Nick Hornby, Elin Hilderbrand, Roxane Gay, Gary Shteyngart, Marlon James, Min Jin Lee, R. L. Stine, and Rebecca Roanhorse.
