Quay, Matthew
(1833-1904) Civil War veteran who became involved in politics after the War. Became a Senator from Pennsylvania, and was politically powerful nationwide. A leading proponent in Congress for New Mexico statehood. Quay County is named in his honor.
Quebradas Back Country Byway
AKA: Quebradas Backcountry Byway, Quebradas Scenic Byway. 24-mile route that loops east of Socorro, through Upper Chihuahuan Desert landscape. Dirt roads maintained by the Bureau of Land Management.
Also spelled as "Qivira". Organized in 1929 as "a group of investigators engaged in research pertaining to the early history of the southwestern part of the United States and of northern Mexico". The group worked to not only preserve and translate documents into English, but also to have the translations published and entered into collections. Materials were published at the University of Southern California and UNM. New Mexico editors included Edgar Lee Hewett, Lansing B. Bloom, George P. Hammond, and Agapito Rey.
