Finding Tax Preparation Help

AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will be operating this year at various sites throughout New Mexico but service will be limited and the process will look a little different this year.   There will be no in person tax services for New Mexico at this point.  People will be asked to wait in their cars while tax prep volunteers take their documents inside the tax-aide site and have them scanned.  After  returning the documents to the individual, they'll be asked to return in a few days to sign their return. Strict safety protocols will be followed.

Taxpayers are required to have an appointment to have their tax returns prepared. There will be three options for doing so.  All services listed on the local AARP website should be available starting Tuesday, Feb. 9.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers
IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC) are your source for personal tax help when you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone, and you want face-to-face tax assistance. Taxpayer Assistance Center locations are available in Albuquerque and larger New Mexico cities.  Centers are closed for all Federal Holidays.

CNM Tax Help New Mexico
This program offers free assistance in preparing and filing income tax returns. We can help most New Mexico residents with an annual household income of less than $50,000 or who are over the age of 65.  Contact the program for more information, and to find out if you qualify.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. The IRS provides an online locator tool to find the VITA site nearest you -- or sites nationwide.

TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly)
The TCE Program offers free tax help for all with priority assistance to people who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.  A majority of the TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide Program. To locate the nearest TCE site or AARP Tax-Aide site between January and April use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669.

IRS Tax Centers
Tax centers have been developed to help you quickly find information related to your particular area of interest, industry or profession on one page.  Centers are available for small business, self-employed individuals, tax professionals -- plus large and/or international businesses, and disaster relief and emergency assistance to individuals and businesses.  See the full list of centers for more information.
