assists New Mexico residents with incomes below 500%* of the federal poverty guidelines. The Modest Means Helpline can assist in civil legal matters including but not limited to domestic relations (divorce, child custody, kinship guardianship, domestic violence), landlord/tenant, small business issues, consumer, and probate.

The State Bar General Referral Program assists those who need legal help but are unsure where to find it. The Program can be contacted at (505) 797-6066 or 1-800-876-6227. The program can put you in contact with a private attorney for up to 30 minutes of legal consultation/case assessment for a cost of a $35 referral fee.

Rules are a special category of law written by state agencies to support, clarify, or implement specific laws enacted by the legislature called statutes. The Consumer & Family Advocacy Services and the Consumer & Environmental Protection Divisions of the Office of the Attorney General enforce consumer laws in the State of New Mexico that exist to shield the public from fraudulent and unfair business practices. Our state’s principal consumer law is the Unfair Practices Act. Under the Unfair Practices Act, the Office of the Attorney General provides multi-level services to the public to ensure that consumers have safe and satisfactory interactions with businesses operating in New Mexico.

The Office of the Attorney General does not act and cannot act as a private attorney for individual citizens. However, in some matters, if a consumer is unable to resolve a dispute with a business, the Consumer and Family Advocacy Services Division’s complaint resolution services may be available. There is no charge to the public for these services.
