Jesus Freak (2001)
Coming-of-age story about a high school girl in Portales. Won the Best Southwestern Film at the 2003 Santa Fe Film Festival. Written by Portales native and Portales High School graduate Laura Lee Bahr-Nichols. This was the first film produced in Portales, and the first HDTV feature shot in New Mexico. Starring Laura Bahr Nichols, Regan Forman, Oded Gross, Pete Kuzov, Amy Dawn Anderson, Josh Kantor.
John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Science fiction/Horror. A mining colony on Mars releases the spirits of ancient Martian warriors. Starring Ice Cube, Natasha Henstridge, Jason Statham, Clea DuVall, Joanna Cassidy, Liam White, and Robert Carradine. Principal filming was done at the White Mesa gypsum mine south of San Ysidro; 40 acres of the white surface were sprayed red with beet-based dye.
John Carpenter's Vampires (1998)
Horror film based upon the novel Vampire$
by John Steakley; follows the exploits of a band of professional vampire hunters. Stars James Woods, Sheryl Lee, and Daniel Baldwin. Filmed in northern New Mexico, with extensive filming in Las Vegas (Plaza Hotel) and Cerrillos where a large set of a "Territorial Prison" was constructed; other locations include the Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch, Rancho de las Golondrinas, San Juan Pueblo, and Stanley.
