The Center for the Book is located in the Special Collections Library, part of the Public Library. Volunteer docents lead field trips to teach about the history of writing and books. Instructors may request an emphasis on one of several areas, including early writing systems, the history of alphabets, illumination and printing. Field trips incorporate hands-on activities, including a tour of the antique and replica printing presses. Students are able to print a page as a souvenir of their visit. Field trips must be scheduled in advance.
Tours and presentations are designed to appeal to students in grades 4, 5 and 6. Please schedule your field trip at least three weeks before your visit. Allow two hours (not including transportation time) for the visit to the Center.
The Thomason Transportation Program provides free round-trip transportation to Title I schools for field trips to public libraries.
To schedule a field trip, please email Special Collections Library or call 848-1376.
